There is a lot of money to be saved when it comes to giving gifts. I found this out the hard way when my daughter started school. In junior kindergarten she was invited to about 10 birthdays! Most of these I had about a week (or less) notice. So I ended up having to buy a lot of gifts at full price. I have a maximum amount I will spend so I had to work a bit harder to keep under budget. Fast forward to today, there are a lot gifts we give out during the year. These include birthdays, Christmas, Easter, weddings & baby gifts just to name a few. We have a large group of friends that we love as well as nephews, parents, siblings and of course our family of 5! Wow thinking about all of it reminds me I need to start budgeting for Christmas now.
Gift giving doesn’t have to break the bank and here are a few tips I follow to make that possible.
I have not purchased anything other than tape(and a few cute Christmas papers) to wrap gifts for over 9 years. How? I save everything(except wrapping paper) and reuse it. My gift wrapping “station” has maybe 50 bags everything from baby to Christmas. I also have a large quantity of tissue paper, many different colors. These things are not a one time use item, they can be re-used over and over again.
Buy on Sale
You should have a good idea of the gifts you need to buy during the year based on your life, everyone’s list is different. For example we have all our family birthdays, mothers/fathers day, holidays, our friends’ children’s birthdays and so on. If you know you will have a birthday to attend in the next 2 months you can purchase a gift on sale ahead of time. Keep an eye out for clearance deals. I like to keep some extras on hand for the surprise invitations my daughter gets from school as well.
Keep a gift “closet”. As you can see from the picture mine is a gift book case. Pick a spot where you can put purchased gifts (perhaps hidden from the kids). This way you have it all in one spot so when you need a last minute gift you can grab it quick.
These are the main things I do to save money on gifts. Is there anything you do to help save on giving gifts, I would love to hear about it.
