Organizing My Coupons!

I did something today that I have been meaning to get to, I finally organized my coupons! It took me about an hour and a half to finish but usually if I keep up with it I can manage to only spend about a TV show worth of commercials on it 🙂 Things around here have been very busy so I haven’t had a chance to get to them until now.

As you can see my organizer was needing some serious help!

What a mess, that first spot should have NO coupons :(

What a mess, that first spot should have NO coupons :(

So to start this overhaul I have 2 goals I need to accomplish.

1. Get all loose coupon into proper spots

2. Make a list of all coupons expiring this month so I don’t let any of them “die”

HELP!!!

HELP!!!

So this is them all in a nice pile, I still had some that needed to be cut, and they were in no specific order. This is where I started, I sat them all on my lap, with my very handy clipboard, and set them into piles. Ones I will use, Ones to Trade, Ones for friends, and ones that expire soon 🙂

Once I had these piles sorted I had to break down the large pile of ones I will use. I organize them by item category in my organizer so this is how I sorted them.

Next I had to get them into the organizer. To save time I take out the ones that expire next month while I am putting the new coupons into my organizer, this saves me going through each category twice. I started on the first divider and worked my way to the last one, taking out any that expire in May or early June, and adding any new ones.

Once this was done I had all the coupons I will use in my organizer, and just a pile for trades and a pile that expire soon. I organized my pile that expire soon, by date and wrote each one down on a list I will take shopping with me. This way I can look at it while I am out and make sure I use these coupons up before they expire 🙂 I have a section for these coupons in the front of my organizer, so in they went.

Now I am ready for faster shopping!

All done!

All done!

All I am left with is all my trade coupons! Now if only I could find a system that would make trades easier too 🙂

I really should organize these too

How do you keep your coupons organized, do you keep up on it regularly or leave it until things are a mess!

  1. I have mine in a binder with those clear pockets. I like to see things spread out in front of me, and that’s the only way I can accomplish it. It is not a large binder, though. I also bought colored clear pocket inserts for the binder, to hold large things. It gets cleared out every Sunday after church when I am going through the inserts from the Sunday paper (along with a steaming pot of Constant Comment!)

I used to use a file system similar to yours, but I became frustrated digging through all the coupons at the store, because very often things will be reduced in price, without being listed in the sale flyer. Since I only clip for things we use, the binder is not overly full. I also have a small yellow legal type pad with the cardboard backer inserted into the binder cover pocket for shopping list, and notes of prices jotted down, to compare at other stores. I’m fairly happy with this, although – there’s always room for improvement! I’m toying with the idea of a large binder, complete with zipper closure, but am waiting for the time when I lose patience with this one, and I am no where near an – “Extreme Couponer.”

    • Thank you for checking out my post 🙂
It sounds like you have a very good system. I tried the binder but found it too bulky to use with my little one riding in the cart. I like the option of having the shopping list “attached” to you binder, saves carrying around 2 separate item 🙂
