Filling in our new Raised Garden Boxes

This post is the continuation of my previous post Building Raised Garden Beds.

On the second day of our new garden project we finished up preparing for the dirt and getting the dirt. I followed the directions from this website, with a few changes. One idea that I really liked the idea of was the bird netting/row covers. So I got a piece of 1″ PVC cut it into 1′ sections, than attached it the boxes. We had to push most of them into the ground so that they didn’t stick out over the top of the box. We attached them with some all around strapping (galvanized so it wont rust). This was cheaper than straps and we have lots left over for future projects. Just 1 strap close to the top was enough to hold them in place.

As you can see in the above picture I did not use landscaping material. Instead I used newspaper. I had it at home and it was free. I used approx 10 layers (total guess :)) and soaked it with water from my rain barrel  This will kill all the grass and weeds below it. You can also use cardboard if you have more of that available. I should mention that I used mostly black and white papers, not the colored flyers. The die from them is better left out of my garden.

Than all you need a lot of dirt. There are of course many place you can buy dirt, either in bags from home improvement store, or garden centers. Or in large bags or truck loads from landscaping companies and on-line companies. However all of these routes will cost you money. And if you read my last post you will no that I got this dirt for free! How much dirt?

Truck Load of Free Dirt

Truck Load of Free Dirt

I was say a lot of dirt 🙂 Here in town the dump collects all of our yard waste, they leave it to compost. Once it is usable as compost (dirt) they make a big pile that anyone can take and use.  All you have to do is shovel it yourself. They also have wood chips available. We also got some of them as well. But they are under all this dirt.

This trip we were very lucky, when we where about half way done one of the workers came over with a big digger and put 2 scoops right into the back of our truck! It was great. Not something that happens usually so we were very excited about it. Once we got it home and into the garden beds it ended up being just enough, plus some for some bare spots in our yard. Thanks to that extra help that we got.

Here is the finished product, I was so excited I started putting the plants back in before getting a picture of them full.

You might not be able to tell from the picture but there is a space between the fence and the boxes. This is were we put the wood chips. That way we wont have grass or weeds grow in that area.

I am very happy with the result and they came together much faster than we expected. Now to finish planting in them and wait to collect all that fresh garden produce!

Do you plant a vegetable garden? What are you growing this year?

First Garage Sales of the Season

I LOVE garage sales! They are a good place to find great deals and interesting things. This weekend I was lucky enough to get out for the first time this year. My fiancee and 1 year old also came with me.

Had good Luck On Finding Things For William

Had Good Luck Finding Things Today

I choose this day to start since there was also a mom to mom sale going on. So was gerenteed to find something while I was out. On Friday night I got out my phone and got all the garage sales from Kijiji and our local paper’s website. I sat down and made my list.

We got an early start and were out the door by 8am!

It paid off I found these shoes at the mom 2 mom sale. The boots are going to come in very handy next time it rains 🙂 The white ones are brand new still have the tag on.

Got some cute clothes for summer too, even a bathing suit for my daughter.

What was the best deal I found, it was actually at a very small garage sale and if it wasn’t for the ad telling me they had kids clothes I might have driven right by. I got the snow suit, 2 pairs of shorts and 2 shirt (one that is Baby Gap) for only $2. Yes that says 2 dollars, I did not forget the Zero.

25C per piece of clothing, I should have got more

I LOVE days like this, the stuff I got made it so worth getting up and out of the house early. We even skipped a few sales and went to the farmers market. I was able to get some sausage that we BBQ’ed that night. It was delicious.

Do you get out on Saturday mornings to hit up the local garage sales? How early do you leave at and do you go alone or with someone else?

Organizing My Coupons!

I did something today that I have been meaning to get to, I finally organized my coupons! It took me about an hour and a half to finish but usually if I keep up with it I can manage to only spend about a TV show worth of commercials on it 🙂 Things around here have been very busy so I haven’t had a chance to get to them until now.

As you can see my organizer was needing some serious help!

What a mess, that first spot should have NO coupons :(

How I Named My Blog

Trying to start and name a blog is no simple task. And deciding to do it was something I never thought I would do. However, I have been trying to sort out how I was going to get our lives in order. I tried a few different things but none of them have worked, most likely because I am such a procrastinator.  I would make plans to try something and never actually get to it. 🙂

Somehow the idea of tracking it all caught my attention. Then I was thinking about how I would stay on track, well if everyone knew what I was up to than I would have people keeping tabs on me. An extra incentive to get things done.
The answer to start a blog came from so many different areas. But the hard part came when I realized I had to get creative and come up with a name! This took some time, I checked out things on-line, found a post with top blog names, and found ideas about what to include and what NOT to include.

So I made a list of the things I plan to blog about.
Kids
Dogs
Ways to save Money
Staying at home with the kids
All things around the house
Recipes and meal ideas
Pinterest stuff
Elimination Communication

So something about being a cheap mom 🙂
I discovered you want something catchy and easy to remember, and that no one was already using. I spent a few days thinking about this. I thought about using our last name as I saw some neat blogs that did that. Voyce, The voyce of …….. Total Blank. Plus I don’t want it too long, and how could I make it clear that I am a stay at home mom blogger? So I thought cheap, nicer word, frugal! YES Frugal Mom, OK that already exists. Can’t copy her. 🙁 What about Frugal stay at home mom, I did not like the way it sounded.

I was stuck, I really like the word frugal, as it doesn’t sound cheap but very clear you like to save money. I am also a stay at home mom and plan to stay that way. These things are the main part of what I will be writing about so I decided I had to get them into the name. I searched online for another way to say stay at home mom. (Have I mentioned I search the web for LOTS of stuff)
I did not like any of the options I found – homemaker, professional parent, domestic engineer, housewife. Nothing suited what I was trying to say. I spend everyday, 24 hours, with my baby taking care of the house is my full time job! Hmmm I’m a full time mom! I liked it, but Full Time Mom could be anything, and I wanted to stand out. I am a Frugal Full Time Mom!

Whats In A Name

Whats In A Name

I did a google search and no one was using the name, even checked twitter and facebook too. So I made it official, I started on twitter 🙂 Than I started the website, and have been going from there, trying to get things in order. At least if someone searches they will find me! The first step has been made, now the possibilities are endless!

If you are interested in what other steps I took to get things in order please leave a comment below and let me know I would be happy to share more.
